About Us
Our farm was originally purchased from the EJ Harding family by Alwin Pohlschneider. Grandfather Alwin was of German descent and came to America at age 18. The farm is now operated by John and Karren Pohlschneider, along with son Eric, who joined his parents in the work in 1995. John takes care of the equipment and the field work for the ryegrass farm. Eric is the head grower for the nursery and is also in charge of the field staff. Karren is in charge of the retail store, its staff, and the bakery. The J & K Pohlschneider Family Farm covers about 500 acres, with 450 acres devoted to raising perennial ryegrass. The ryegrass seed is used for golf courses and homeowner’s lawns, and the ryegrass straw is exported to Japan and used as feed for animals.
French Prairie Gardens was started in 1987 as a self-service stand that sold fruits and vegetables. The gardens require about 20 acres to raise fruits, vegetables, pumpkin patch, and house the nursery products. The first building for French Prairie Gardens was constructed in 1995, followed by the show house in 1999 and a second show house in 2001. Other family members are also helping, part time as needed, and certainly full time during the festival weekends. Daughter Katey Meza is the educational coordinator and is in charge of school and group tours. Daughter Stacy Pohlschneider is in charge of marketing and promotions. And daughter Emily Edwards helps with the design work for flyers and updates done to the website. John and Eric star in the Pigtucky Derby pig races, performing a show with pigs that are trained by Eric to run around the track. Click here to email us at info@fpgardens.com
